Kijk, dit is nu de eerste van de enige twee soul platen die in Mijn Top 100 staan. Marvin Gaye’s album What’s going on – uit 1971 – is een van de meest indrukwekkende platen die ik ooit hoorde. Ik schafte deze voor mij onbekende plaat aan nadat een poll van muziek journalistenin het muziekblad OOR het op de tweede plaats deed belanden, van de lijst ‘meest invloedrijke popalbums’.
Nu is de muziek nog steeds indrukwekkend. De langspeler duurt nog geen 30 minuten, maar daarin neemt dit muzikaal genie je dan ook mee op een tocht van zeldzaam mooie teksten en sacrale muziek. Up and down bas riffs, de aanhoudend tikkende pauken, af en toe eenalt sax op de achtergrond, en de relaxte piano akkoorden van da soulbrother hemzelve, de hele combinatiegeeft de wanhopige doch ingetogen teksten van Marvin een bijzondere dimensie. Haal eens diep adem en kijk of je na 9 minuten zelf een antwoord weet op een van de meest gestelde vragen in dit leven.
Het is tegenwoordig een rage om allerlei ellende filmpjes op bekende muziek te zetten, maar voor dit nummer heb ik eenloepzuivere concertregistratie gekozen, met wat achteloos geschoten filmpjes in een Amerikaanse stad, die op een of andere manier toch indruk maken met de muziek erbij. Dit is dus het verschil tussen echte muziek en dat soort stage-bagger als bijvoorbeeld… Rammstein? Nou ja, daarom dus ook een plaatsje hoger op de ladder.
