Na een kort bezoek aan Nederland ben ik ondertussen weer terug, en in Port Said heeft de tijd niet bepaald stil gestaan. Vorige week is zomaar onverwachts de Egyptische president langsgeweest om de terminal te openen. Helaas heb ik dat gemist, want de man landde met een handvol helikopters en de nationale garde op een terminal die geheel van de buitenwereld was afgesloten. Er werd in de pers echter geen woord gerept over SCCT…

Mubarak opens East Port Said harbour
President Hosni Mubarak opened the East Port Said harbour on Thursday within the framework of modernizing project of maritime transportation fleet and enhancement of Egypt’s share of international trade.
The project is to turn north Sinai into an international transit hub for containers to be offloaded from large vessels to trans-ship to other points in the Middle East.
Mubarak was greeted upon arrival by Prime Minister Ahmed Nazif, other officials and Minister of Transportation Essam Sharaf El Din, who presented him a Pharaonic boat as a gift.
Minister of Transport Essam Sharaf delivered a statement welcoming President Mubarak on the occasion of inaugurating the harbour.
The minister said that the inauguration of the harbour would increase the volume of world trade, pointing out that Egypt had now a rare chance to benefit from its good location.
He said the harbour is a world transit area with a unique position which would help create valuable industries.
The minister said the harbour contained quays with a total length of 12 kilometres, in addition to a wave breaker and a navigational canal.
He said that President Mubarak had repeatedly stressed the importance of getting out of the narrow and crowded valley to open areas.
Zo dan, en ook stonden er ineens twee extra kranen op de kade (waarvan spoedig een fotootje), dus je licht je hielen even en gelijk gebeurd er van alles. Maar goed, tijd om de weblog weer op te pikken en iedereen weer op de hoogte te houden.
